Why This Update Matters
Over the last several years, advances in pathology, molecular diagnostics, and our understanding of HPV-associated and HPV-independent disease pathways have revealed the need for a more consistent and biologically meaningful classification system.
The new ISSVD terminology:
- Classifies disease according to HPV-associated (HPVa) and HPV-independent (HPVi) pathways
- Establishes p16 and p53 immunohistochemistry as essential tools for accurate classification
- Aligns terminology with contemporary evidence and the evolving WHO framework
- Improves communication between clinicians, pathologists, researchers, and patients
- Supports more accurate risk assessment and treatment planning
